St Patricks Tower was constructed in 1757 by Peter Roe to power his new whiskey distillery on Thomas Street. St. Patrick’s Tower is a 150 ft high brick-built windmill which is believed to be one of the oldest extant smock windmills in Europe and the tallest too. A copper cupola with a figure of Saint Patrick was added to the tower in the late nineteenth century.

By 1887 the windmill was no longer powering the distillery which was now covering 17 acres and producing 2 million gallons of whiskey per year. By 1949 the distillery and all of its mature stock was gone and the site was bought by the Guinness family. The windmill now stands alone on the site of The Digital Hub on James Street.
