This week our Irish Whiskey Weekly News features updates from Conor McGregor’s latest business venture, Bushmills’ warehouses have €90 million of stock stored in them, and the opening of two brand new distilleries in Ireland – Pearse Lyons in Dublin, and Slane Distillery in County Meath.

So let’s see what’s been happening this week in our Irish whiskey weekly news.

Pearse Lyons Distillery officially opens its doors

The new Pearse Lyons Distillery opened for business on Saturday, 26 August. The latest distillery for Dublin is situated on James St, only a stone’s throw from the Guinness Storehouse – and right on the Dubline walking trail.

The distillery has released four whiskeys to celebrate its opening.

They brought distillers choice, Cooper’s select, founder’s choice and the original to market, and we look forward to sampling all when we head there very soon. You can book a tour on their website here:

Slane Distillery now open to visitors

Slane Castle is set to become a destination for whiskey lovers with the opening of the Slane Distillery and visitor centre on August 31. Built within the surrounds of the 250-year-old stables and grain stores, the working distillery expects to welcome 40,000 visitors each year initially.

Slane Distillery and the visitor centre was unveiled after two years of renovations and preparation. Dating from the 1750s, the listed buildings required considerable renovation and conservation work. While most of the distillery inhabits the Georgian stables, additional buildings have been constructed unobtrusively towards the back of the site.

Bushmills has €90 million worth of whiskey in their warehouses

Nearly £90 million worth of whiskey is currently maturing in casks under lock and key at the Old Bushmills Distillery, the company’s annual accounts have revealed. Northern Irelands oldest-established whiskey maker – it was first licensed in 1609 – enjoyed another hugely profitable trading year in the 12 months to December 2016, according to figures just filed at Companies House.

The report shows that, among its current stock, the distillery – now owned by Mexican tequila giant Jose Cuervo – is sitting on £86.9 million worth of maturing whiskey of its various world-famous brands, compared to £79.8m a year earlier.

Dublin Whiskey Tours - mcgregor

Conor McGregor to launch new Irish whiskey

Following his boxing debut on Saturday, 26 August, the Irish mixed martial artist announced his new whiskey venture at a press conference – a glass of whiskey in one hand and a bottle of Notorious in the other. The current UFC Lightweight Champion faced defeat after losing a match to American boxer Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas over that weekend.

Taking to the podium, McGregor said: “Notorious Irish whiskey, coming soon. I’m going to take over the Irish whiskey market – and this is delicious! Boy, that whiskey tastes so good. Keep an eye out for it.”
