Irish Whiskey Weekly News – Dublin Whiskey Tours – 30 June 2017

There has been so much happening this week in the world of Irish whiskey, we almost don’t know where to start! We’ve crammed a lot into this week’s Irish Whiskey Weekly News – Jameson, Clare Island , Ian Rankin,  and upcoming events Whiskey Live and Irish Whiskey Awards, and lots more besides. Enjoy the read!

Dublin Whiskey Tours - The Irish Times

The Only Way Is Up

We start on a high note this week with the Irish Times reporting how Irish whiskey is now the toast of the town! Business journalist Charlie Taylor highlights how sales soared in 2016 last year, led by none other than Jameson – the brand benefited from a 12.4 per cent rise in volumes worldwide. The US, of course, is our most successful market with exports jumping significantly, with Ireland and France the next highest countries for sales respectively, but interestingly, emerging markets such as Kenya are ones to watch too! It’s a great story from Charlie with lots of facts and figures in there.

Dublin Whiskey Tours - Clare Island

Clare Island Whiskey – Matured At Sea

Here at Dublin Whiskey Tours, we just love this story. Clare Island’s new venture is quite unique, certainly in Irish whiskey terms. The O’Grady family, owners of the local ferry service Clare Island Ferry Company, share a passion of whiskey and the sea, and thought up the brilliant idea to combine both by maturing Clare Island Whiskey at sea.

Dublin Whiskey Tours - Ian Rankin

Ian Rankin Loves Powers, Jameson & Crested Ten!

Crime novelist Ian Rankin has shared a selection of Scottish and Irish whiskies from distilleries that mean a lot to him. And guess what: Jameson is in there along with a great story attached to it of hitchhiking around France with his Belfast-born girlfriend, now his wife, after graduation. “Whenever I get an Irish whiskey, it takes me back to that first overseas trip,” he reminisced. He also ended up making a TV series with a man who he drank Crested Ten whiskey with in the Crown Bar in Belfast – “that’s whiskey.”

Dublin Whiskey Tours - Irish Distillers

A Wine With A Whiskey Finish

Irish Distillers’ Midleton Distillery has teamed up with Jacob’s Creek to launch a new red wine with an exciting whiskey finish. Aged in traditional wine barrels, Jacob’s Creek Double Barrel Cabernet Sauvignon is then interestingly finished in aged Irish whiskey barrels. It will be available to purchase in selected retailers from July 1.

Dublin Whiskey Tours - Whiskey Live 2017

For Your Diaries

It’s happening! Whiskey Live returns to The Printworks, Dublin Castle on November 25 for the seventh year running.  There will be an eclectic range of Irish and international whiskeys, along with a variety of food and tasting master classes, according to Hospitality Ireland this week. You’ll have the opportunity to sample lovely drams, cask-matured craft beers and great cocktails.

Also, this year’s Irish Whiskey Awards will take place at the Jameson Distillery, Bow Street, Dublin 7 on October 19, 2017. Get your entries in now.

And Finally

Here follows some other interesting stories from the week. A Clare entrepreneur – maturing whiskey on her family farm in Cooraclare under the J.J. Corry brand – is set to become a Nissan Generation Next ambassador.

Irish whiskey was recently celebrated at a trade showcase in Chicago as part of an Irish trade mission to the US and Mexico with Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, and Board Bia’s Tara McCarthy in attendance.

And finally, MarketWatch calls Slane Whiskey “an Irish whiskey with a bit more depth and richness”.
